The Pittsburgh Penguins have won the 2016 Stanley Cup final over the San Jose Sharks and their 4th Stanley in their franchise’s history which is another great feat for them. What other moments do you feel are part of this great franchise? We have our list right here for you. Take a look, maybe we have got them all or you feel we missed one and you want to suggest. Either way here we go:
1) Mario Lemieux’s First Game on October 11 1984 – On the first shot in his very first shift, Mario Lemieux notched the first goal of his career against Boston Bruins goaltender Pete Peters. “Mario Lemieux living up quickly to all the advertisement,” proclaimed the Penguins’ play-by-play announcer.
2) Mario Lemieux collects 8 points in a Playoff Game on April 25th 1989– The Penguins jumped out to 6-1 lead in the first period behind four goals from Lemieux. He went on to add one more, as well as three assists, to bring his point total to eight. The final score of that historic game was 10-7 for the penguins. Lemieux’s eight points in a playoff game is an NHL record not likely to be broken.
3) Mario Lemieux scores 5 goals in 5 different ways on December 31, 1988 – Mario Lemieux scored a goal in all five possible ways: even strength, shorthanded, power play, penalty shot and empty net. It’s a feat that’s not likely to be re-done any point soon.
4) Game Six of the 1991 Stanley Cup Finals on May 25 1991 – The Penguins dismantled the North Stars on Minnesota’s home ice behind four points from Mario Lemieux and a perfect night from Tom Barrasso (39 saves) with a final score of 8-0. This gave the Penguins there first Stanley Cup in franchise history and of course would repeat in 1992
5) Sydney Crosby July 30 2005 – After a lockout cancelled the season in 2004-2005, the NHL held a lottery to determine the order of the draft. The Pittsburgh Penguins drew the first pick. They took Crosby, a junior league legend dubbed “The Next One,” and the rest is hockey history including his first Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2009.
