Topps and O-Pee-Chee produced a set of hockey cards.  Each pack sold for 5 cents and in that pack you received four cards, a pair of “hockey stamps” and a stick of gum.  The complete set consists of 66 cards featuring players and coaches from the Chicago Blackhawks, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers.

Each team had their own section in the set.  Boston Bruins are card number 1 to 22, Chicago Blackhawks number 23 to 44 and New York Rangers number 45 to 65.  Card number 66 was a Checklist – the first time Topps had included one in a set.

Each team section starts with its coach on a card that has a rounded edge that looks like a television tube on its side.  Rookie players have a similar design.  Each team also has a team picture and two Hockey Highlight cards at the end of their section.  The “action” cards are designed to look like they’re taking place on T.V.

The card fronts feature player image superimposed on a game scene.  A puck in the corner contained his name, position and team.  A simple white border surrounds the card.  Backs were printed with a red border containing images of players in action.  A circle shaped like a puck in the upper left corner contains the card number.  The players name, position and team extend across the top.  The box inside the red border has a line of statistics from the previous year and a bilingual biography.

The two key Rookie cards are of Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert both of the Rangers.  Other rookie cards include Ted Green, Pat Stapleton, Dallas Smith, Orland Kurtenbach and Denis DeJordy.

The most valuable cards in this set are of Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita of the Blackhawks.

Hockey Hall of Fame players in this set include Leo Boivin, Johnny Bucyk, Rudy Pilous, Pierre Pilote, Bobby Hull, Glenn Hall, Stan Mikita, Doug Harvey, Lorne “Gump” Worsley, Harry Howell, Andy Bathgate, Jean Ratelle and Rod Gilbert.

We have a large selection of autographed hockey memorabilia in our shop. Come check it out and see if we have your favorite player.
